Michael Bethencourt, the man holding the strings to the smockpuppet, lives near Madison, Wisconsin, in the United States. He spends most of his time writing music and programming.
His post-jungle influences include Venetian Snares, Squarepusher, Exile, Doormouse, Jason Forrest, Drop the Lime, Aphex Twin, Amon Tobin, stuntrock, The Flashbulb, and many others. In addition to electronic music, he also enjoys Slavonic folk musics, jazz (most notably yiddish swing, avant jazz, and boogie-woogie), Modern/Romantic clasical music and opera (such as Benjamin Britten and Mussorgsky), and occassionally hip hop, metal, industrial, medieval music, and punk rock.
Besides music, he also greatly enjoys martial arts (Kenpo, Hapkido, and Taekwondo) and computer science, and is a satsified user of the free operating system called Linux. He is interested to a lesser extent in classic space operas (Buck Rogers, Flash Gordan), old movies in general (Hitchcock, Bob Hope), pre-Tolkien fantasy (E. R. Eddison, Lord Dunsany), gaming, art, writing, and photography.
